There may be no pest that haunts the nightmares of homeowners the way a cockroach does. They can survive without their head for a week, handle below freezing temperatures that kill other insects, and honestly? They’re just downright gross. The last thing anyone wants in their home is a cockroach.

The good news is that because they are nocturnal and prefer dark, unused spaces in your home, you may not see a cockroach in your home for a long time. The bad news is that once you’ve seen a roach, you most likely already have a cockroach infestation. That’s why it is important for you to be on the lookout for these four signs that you Charlotte home has a cockroach problem, and catch your cockroach problem before it gets out of control.

The 411 On Cockroaches

Cockroaches come in all shapes and sizes. They can range from 1/2 an inch to 6 inches in size and are usually a shade of brown or shiny black. The roaches we find in Charlotte are typically between 1/2 an inch and 2 inches. The species of roach most common to Charlotte are the German cockroach, the American cockroach, and the smoky brown roach. Roaches prefer quiet, dark habitats like crawl spaces, basements, cabinets, and pantries.

Four Signs Of A Roach Infestation

Because of their nocturnal and skittish nature, seeing a cockroach in your Charlotte home probably means there are more hiding. You are far more likely to see these four signs of their presence before you ever see a live roach:

  1. Odor: The pheromone that many species of cockroach give off produces a distinct odor. It is most noticeable to those with sensitive noses, and they describe it as a musty scent.

  2. Egg capsules: Cockroaches lay their eggs in capsules. These capsules are about 1/3 of an inch in size and can usually be found stuck to surfaces near food sources.

  3. Droppings: Cockroach droppings are dark and tiny. They resemble coffee grounds or black pepper flakes.

  4. Smear marks: Cockroaches will try to stay close to the safety of the walls as they move. When they do this, they leave dark, irregularly-shaped marks along the areas they frequently travel. These are usually found at the base of a wall or on a horizontal surface.

Are Roaches Dangerous?

Cockroaches aren’t just a creepy annoyance that you have to squash with your shoe; they can be a health hazard in your home as well. The presence of cockroaches in a home has been found to trigger allergic reactions and asthma attacks, especially in younger children and the elderly. They also are known carriers of disease. Roaches have been found to spread at least 33 types of bacteria, including salmonella and E.coli. They can also spread a number of parasitic worms and other dangerous human pathogens.
