Who Else In Charlotte Wants To Avoid Rodents?

December 27, 2019

Sometimes it seems like fads and trends change on a daily basis. One day, kids are obsessed with moon boots; the next day, slime is the big thing. Culture is constantly changing, but one trend has never gone away. Far back in recorded history, rodents have been disliked by society. Even before rodents were found to be dangerous disease spreaders, people still sought ways to keep them out of their homes. Today, nothing has changed, and avoiding rodents remains the hype. If you are not on the rodent-avoiding train, today might be your day to hop aboard.

Problems Rodents Cause

Have you ever heard of the Black Plague? It swept across Europe in the 13th century and was responsible for the death of over 50 million people. What if we told you that rodents played a huge part in its spread? Although the disease wasn’t directly carried by rodents but, rather, the fleas they were hosts for, rodents continue to take the majority of the blame for Black Death casualties. To this day, rodents still remain a threat in more ways than one.

To start, rodents can directly carry and spread a number of dangerous diseases including salmonellosis, rat-bite fever, and hantavirus. Rodents are also capable of transporting fleas, ticks, and mites into homes. If you have indoor pets that do not have proper protection against these parasitic pests, they could be at risk. Finally, rodents pose a unique threat with their sharp teeth. Just like cats having to scratch to keep their claws worn down, rodents have to chew to manage the length of their teeth. Common damage that results from this includes severed electrical wiring, chewed-through utility piping, and other serious structural damage throughout a home.

How To Keep Rodents Out

At this point, you are probably wondering to yourself, “How can I keep rodents out of my home?” The answer is not as simple as you might like. Excluding and deterring rodents are difficult tasks that require diligence and hard work. If you are up for the task, here are some things we recommend:

  • Keep your yard clean of clutter and debris.

  • Maintain your grass and keep tree branches and shrubs trimmed away from your home’s exterior.

  • Store firewood at least 30 feet from your home’s exterior.

  • Regularly pick up any dropped fruit or food scraps that have fallen on your property.

  • Use a caulking gun and some wire mesh to fill in and seal gaps and cracks in your home’s exterior foundation.

  • Repair any damage to your siding and/or shingles.

  • Install wire screens inside gutter exits and exterior ventilation shafts.

  • Make sure your chimney is equipped with a rodent-proof cap.

  • Clean regularly and thoroughly indoors.

  • Pick up pet food and water bowls before going to bed each night.

  • Store leftover food inside airtight containers and in the fridge if possible.

  • Repackage boxed foods like cereal into stronger glass, plastic, or metal containers.
