Centipede Identification & Prevention

What are centipedes?

Centipedes are predators that feed on various nuisance insects and spiders; they, along with other predatory insects, help control insect populations, making them eco-important pests. These arthropods have flat; elongated bodies likened to leggy worms. Each centipede’s body segment has one pair of legs; their first pairs of limbs end in sharp claws and contain venom glands. Centipedes also have long antennae covered in dense hair that helps them locate prey.

The most common species of centipede in our area, the house centipede, has about 15 pairs of legs. House centipedes have dirty-yellow bodies with three dark, longitudinal stripes of color. Their legs have light and dark bands, giving them a striped appearance.

Are centipedes dangerous?

Centipedes have venom glands and are capable of delivering painful bites to people. However, bites to humans are a rare occurrence, and their venom is not strong enough to cause a severe reaction. Although their unpleasant appearance causes fear, centipedes are mostly nuisance pests and pose no significant threats to people or our property, but it's still good to know how to remove centipedes from your property.

Why do I have a centipede problem?

Centipedes are problematic for homeowners because they live outside, close to the exterior of our homes. When the weather becomes too hot and dry, these moisture-loving pests seek refuge indoors, usually moving inside through cracks in the foundation or basement doors.

Where will I find centipedes?

Centipedes are nocturnal and hide during the day in dark, damp areas. Hiding spots include mulch, stepping stones, landscaping ties, and leaf piles. Those that make their way inside choose dark, moist places to hide, like basements, bathrooms, kitchens, and areas under sinks.
