How To Get Rid Of Fire Ants On Your Charlotte Property
July 5, 2021
Ants are one of the most common pests in Charlotte, North Carolina, and most home and business owners will encounter them at one point or another. However, when it comes to ants, not all species are equal. While many are just harmless nuisance pests, some are more dangerous or destructive.
One of the most dangerous species in the area is the fire ant. These pests are notorious for their ability to both bite and sting, and these marks can be painful and leave you with burning and itching sensations for up to an hour after the attack occurs.
While fire ants are usually found outside where they build their colonies in the dirt, they do make their way close to homes and businesses which can put you and others around you at risk. You can identify fire ants and tell them apart from other species by their reddish-brown coloration and the fact that they have a small stinger on the end of their bodies. They are usually quite small at only around a 1/4th of an inch long. Like other ants, they have six legs and a pair of antennae.
How Dangerous Are Fire Ants?
When fire ants bite and sting they can inject venom, and while this isn’t always dangerous, it can be. Some people are allergic to this venom, so being bitten or stung by a fire ant can lead to a severe medical problem or, in rare cases, fatalities. Fire ants can also inject their venom over and over as they swarm.
The other concern is that most people don’t know they are allergic until they’ve been attacked, so it’s always best to be cautious and try to avoid being bitten or stung in the first place.
Are Fire Ants Difficult To Remove?
Because of the risks of fire ants, it’s important to try to remove an infestation as soon as you see one. However, these ants aren’t easy to get rid of using DIY methods. They have large colonies that can be home to up to 20,000 individual ants. Their nests are sprawling, underground tunnels. They also have multiple queens in one colony which makes eradicating these pests even more difficult.
When fire ants sense that their colony is being attacked, they will disperse from the nest and move to recolonize a nearby area. Because of this, it’s nearly impossible to remove the entire infestation and kill every single queen.

Some Fire Ant Prevention Tips
If you don’t already have fire ants and want to get a head start on keeping them away, there are a few steps you can take to prevent these pests.
- As fire ants are mostly yard pests but can get inside, make sure to seal up any cracks and holes in exterior walls. Also, install door sweeps and weather stripping.
- Fire ants are usually attracted to an area because of food sources. Help prevent all ants by covering trash cans with secured lids and cleaning up any food and drink spills.
- Make sure to store pet food indoors and in an airtight container.
These measures combined with ongoing pest control are the best way to keep fire ants away.
